While talking to a friend about the A$AP Mob style visuals and what I intend to do with the brand he mentioned Cole Bennett, a US-based Director who’s created loads of music videos for up and coming hip-hop artists from Ski Mask The Slup God to Lil Xan and many more.

The making of video actually gives a good insight into Cole Bennetts process of planning, filming and editing his video’s. What’s amazing it there was no budget or much of a plan for this video. It was shot in New York. Most of the processes he used were for the first time also, he overlayed vaporwave stock footage to give the glitch effect using masking to perfect it.

He used Pixel Sorting to create the pull-down effect. and a magnifying effect to give him giant ayes in some scenes.

When people wear a name brand, normally the logo means an awful lot to them, or even sometimes, lack thereof. To begin my quest for the logo world, I’m gonna start with one of my favorite graphic designers in the game, Michel Beirut.

This video show’s Beirut talking about his take on the logo’s around the world. His stance is actually quite interesting.

“I Think logo’s are just kind of… overated –

I am actually often quite ambuvulent about them.”

That’s a good point, I need to think about how my brand might change as technology does and make sure it will always be relevant.

Luckily I think UK Hip Hop is ever growing and becoming more and more relevant in the world, especially the UK.

Studio Blup – Remixing Brands Brief – PT 8 – Music Influences – Boiling it down

After quickly writing down artist’s that I was aware of I began looking up other artist’s that could be included on my list of ‘don’s’.

I thought the best way to separate them would be by location, as I said I’d like to include artists from all over the UK. This way I can ensure they’re evenly spread and start to think about the best places to hold an event.

I’m thinking about splitting the event into 3 parts.

Northern Don’s
Midlands Massacre
Southern Shutdown
maybe even a 4th event that’s hosted in another smaller city.
(extra idea Dublin don’s st paddy’s day special)

At first, I was thinking about including Rap battles, but even though it’s it’s never taken to heart or acted upon it’s still quite an aggressive event, also event’s such as don’t flop and lord of the mics.

With my final choice, I would like to make sure the artists are as spread across the country as possible as I feel it would add more appeal and flavor than keeping it strictly or mostly to London / south.

Plus I’m a northerner, don’t want my side left out.

I also want to put an emphasis on the underground aspect and cover a wider range of genres branching from UK hip-hop. such as:

There needs to be some sort of consistency in my choices I think the brand I’m wanting to choose is DONNAY as I feel the name fits best with the scene. It can be abbreviated to DON – Wich is a common term across UK culture.

Where Is everyone going wrong?

After having a little think about how I could make my brand stand out, I started to wonder, what is everyone else in the in the industry doing wrong?

From my research it sounds like sweat shops and contrivercial campaigns have caused the most harm to leading brands.

but let’s put the entertainmeint aside and see whats lacking in the market that an up and coming brand like mine can take advantage of.

Even though people are buying into these massive brands, with the rise of Hype Beasts and celebrities. It’s surprising to see how little people care about ethics unless they’re doing something wrong.
